Basic Sugar Cookie Recipe

Sugar cookies are a classic treat enjoyed by people of all ages. These simple cookies are made with just a few ingredients and are a blank canvas for creativity. Whether you decorate them with frosting, sprinkles, or leave them plain, sugar cookies are a delicious and fun dessert to make.

To make sugar cookies, you will need:

  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

To start, cream together the butter and sugar until they are well combined. Add in the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until everything is fully incorporated. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a little bit more flour until it reaches the desired consistency.

Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Use cookie cutters to cut out your desired shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until they are just starting to turn golden around the edges. Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once your cookies are cool, you can decorate them with frosting, sprinkles, or any other desired toppings. You can also get creative with the dough itself by adding in different mix-ins like chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit. The possibilities are endless with sugar cookies!

Sugar cookies are a classic and versatile dessert that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you're making them for a holiday party, a bake sale, or just because, these sweet treats are sure to be a hit with all ages. So why not give them a try and see what creative twists you can come up with?
